… to a working mother whose kids won’t eat tomatoes or mixed-up food, who is struggling to take a measly 7-minute lunchbreak to eat a sandwich, who is worried about fish stocks and food ethics

… and who also ‘Fuck-It’ eats every other weeknight when that first glass of wine relaxes her self-responsibility along with her frazzled mind – And let’s be honest: Emotionally? She still needs that relief right now.

Those gherkin times? That was after I got home from my nightshifts on The Guardian newsdesk.

Each shift was intense, full of performance pressure.

Afterwards, I’d eat to come down, for reward, to drop responsibility. Because I was tired of striving, and because in my mind I had made sacrifices for work and deserved ‘fun’

And this wasn’t a new pattern, it was just a variation.

In my teens, I had recovered from binge eating (and periodic bulimia), after spotting an advert in a Saturday magazine stuffed under my bed – for a CBT & hypnotherapy slimming product.

It was a total lifesaver – I never went back to bingeing.

 

But decades later, here I was.  Needing what I now call My Second Recoveryemotional recovery.

So I returned to what saved me the first time round. Only this time I took my CBT understanding to a deeper, feeling level.

I now use those same tools: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Hypnotherapy and most dynamically, Coaching to help hardworking people stop overeating.

Trust me – I have seen this work, time and again in 1:1 sessions.

How much time do I need to commit to the program?

3 hours per week. 

You get a textbook/workbook every two weeks, and each take around 4 hours total to read and complete. They are fun, so once you start, you’ll want to do them. 

Recorded hypnosis sessions in the online course typically take 20mins/week, (or 4mins/day for daily ones). 

We do a 1-hour group Zoom every 2 weeks, and you have a 60-minute 1:1 call with Laura in the interim week throughout the programme (6 in total).

I’m international, can I still join?

Yay! 

I work with clients from all over the world, the calls and programme are in English.

The call time is aimed to be OK across the majority of timezones, but you can always watch the replay if you miss the group session.

We do a 1-hour group Zoom every 2 weeks, and you have a 60-minute 1:1 call with Laura in the interim week throughout the programme (6 in total).

I have never not been able to find a time for 1:1 sessions, even if it means me getting up really early.

Will I lose weight?

I have 2 questions for you.

Do you think your weight is mostly due to overeating, or that lack of self-care is a contributing factor? 

AND

Is your eating itself (not your body size) causing you emotional pain, such as guilt, preoccupation, obsession, regret, self-reproach, loss of self-confidence? 

YES – Great. I’ll teach you to stop overeating, and then you’ll see if your body responds to that! 

NO or I DON’T KNOW – Hey, I’ll always be real with you about this.

Calories in, calories out – that’s horribly oversimplified.

Hormones, DNA, the amount of sleep you get, your stress levels, gut issues, other health issues, childhood trauma… there are actually so many hidden contributing factors to weight.

Some studies suggest that our healthy actions only account for about a third of factors around weight. A third!

But stopping overeating always makes you feel less preoccupied, so maybe those patterns are yours to break just for your own sanity.  

Coaching and hypnosis can help you develop self-care around eating and in your wider life too.

For instance, we may be able to use hypnosis to break other habits which are having a knock-on effect on your weight, eg. Staying up late watching TV. 

We can only change the behaviours that are within our sphere of influence, and see what happens.
