Does your mind repeatedly nag you about how fat you think you are, and how you ‘really should’ stop eating so much junk? Food psychology coach Laura Lloyd explains how to get out of a cycle of negative, self-discouraging thought around weight.

When do your daydream moments happen while you’re at work?

And does your mind visualise what you want to achieve, or go to catastrophes you need to watch out for?

Daydream rehearsal.

Using your imagination to role play.

Focusing your mind on new possibilities, when you feel stuck in old patterns.

You’ll practise the new positive thoughts, feelings, and reactions you want to have, so that when you get into your tricky times of day, your new habits have had a head start.

In Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy this process is structured.

For instance, I might talk a client through practising replacing her after-work “Cookies will help me help the kids with homework” thought, and coping with the urge to eat without eating, or maybe her after-dinner “I need a WINE-down” moment.

We’ll repeat it until she’s confident she can handle the situation IRL.

‘What is hypnotherapy?’ is one of psychology’s longest-researched phenomena.

Perhaps because it’s one of the oldest and most intriguing areas of psychology, one of the best researched.

Contrary to popular belief, the skill is all on the part of imaginer.

But it’s not a ‘special’ skill, (or a ‘special state’ like a trance). It’s probably a combination of skills you already have.

For instance, every day, you use your focus and your attention and your imagination all the same time to think about what you want to get yourself to do, and convince yourself to do it. I’m about to ‘get myself’ to work on a Google Doc right now!!

It’s just that, without my voice guiding you, you may not be bothered to do it, or your mind may wander, you may not really dedicate your attention to it.

As with everything, it comes down to habits.

You see we are all, our whole identity, our whole ‘personality’ as we see it, just a collection of habits. Habitual thought patterns. Habitual sensations. It’s a good thing, if a bit, uh, scary.

When you change your habits, you change your identity. And the possibilities are unlimited.

Coaching and cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy are proven tools to break habits and make habits, in a way that goes deeper than trying to simply manage behaviours.

We look at the emotions and thoughts that are driving your behaviours.

We look at your motivation and get rid of mixed feelings about stopping eating after work.

We look at, and rehearse, dealing with urges to eat, so that they don't feel so compelling.
